My Middle school would like to start a mariachi group. What are the best beginning songs to start with, Where can I buy them, and can anyone in our area help me. I have 3 string Orch. Band, 4 piano classes and choir and have lots of students that are interested in a group. Our Village Center will help us also. Where do I start?

Answer:
Dear Louise:  There are many steps to starting a mariachi program, one of which includes obtaining the proper instrumentation.  I have a list of curriculum consultants and experts in this under http://www.sobrino.net/mer.  Send me an email and I will help with your other questions.  You'll find it listed all over the MPC site.

I just have one question. Do you offer transcriptions of songs for just the guitar and voice?

Answer:
Dear Gustavo:  I don't sell transcriptions for guitar and voice only because there are many cancioneros available for sale with that same information.  MPC is specialized for full mariachi instrumentation/notation.

I plan on expanding MPC's catalog, however, to possibly include those cancioneros for sale via internet.  Keep checking in towards the end of the year!

Saludos Cordiales;

I am very interesed in getting more information on voice, and also interested in forming an all-female mariachi in my city of Oxnard. I am involved in a non-profit organization called "Inlakech" and would very much like information on how to start an all-female program and who to contact regarding teaching. Thank you.

Answer:
I think the first thing to do in these situations is to recruit women or young girls from already established music programs. Look for the violinists and trumpet players with experience. A cellist or viola player in an orchestra program can more easily adapt to the guitarrón, and will learn quicker if she already has had music training. Those are the difficult instrument players to find. Start training a guitarist/vihuelist as soon as you can. Repertory should begin at a basic level to maintain proper technique and control. Musically, don't take anything but baby steps towards your goal because in the end, the product will suffer without proper foundations.

I am currently a nurse, but I also love to sing and I do not want to get to old, can you please give me some advice? I live in San Bernardino, Ca Thank You. ph# 909 884-5173.

Well, if you've never had voice lessons or vocal technique, you should definitely start there.  When you find out how "not to get old," pass the info!!   =)

A wonderful site - professional, educational, enlightening! I am looking for a recording of a song called "Prieta Linda". Any suggestions of particular artists that sing this song and where I might purchase a CD? I'm not sure if it is a specifically "mariachi" song. It is my parents "love song" and I want a recording to play at a family wedding. With appreciation, Elle

Answer:
You should try doing a search on the net first on several MP3 database websites.  Try
Audiogalaxy Satellite (or www.download.com
) where I have found many recorded mariachi group and ranchera singer audios available.    If you search by artist, try Antonio Aguilar or Vicente Fernández.

I think it's wonderful that you have transcriptions. Maybe I can buy some and make me a good mariachi <group> to play with. I would like to play at the Hollywood Bowl one time before I retire. Here are some more songs to transcribe: Arandas, El piene de oro, La borrachita. La barca de oro, Las bodas de Luis Alonso, Rosas de mayo, Café colón, Tú y la mentira; ideas only that I am thinking. Thank you very much for this nice web.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I was already working on some new polkas and sones jalisciences like the ones you suggested.  They should be ready before the end of the year.

Good luck on your endeavors.

Question:
What are those large guitar-like instruments often used in Mariachi?

Answer:
I am assuming that you mean the traditional bass instrument for the standard mariachi ensemble.  It is the only portable acoustic bass in the world, and is indigenous to Mexico.  It is called the guitarrón.

If you mean an actual larger guitar, you may be referring to the guitarra de golpe, another traditional mariachi ensemble instrument, but not always in the current standard instrumentation; more so, it is seen these days in the show groups.

We are currently working on a page that demonstrates all the standard mariachi instrumentation.  Watch for that link!

Question:
Do you have to be a certain age to be in mariachi?

Answer:
Well, one of the things you have to remember is that at 3 years you are more limited in your abilities than when you are 10, for example.  It doesn't mean you can't learn about mariachi at any age, but unless you are a "Mozart" (like a musical genius) you should take baby steps, learn the foundations of your instrument properly, and perform when you are able to handle the physical demands of the performance aspect.

In Mexico, one of the most important relationships involving the transmission of the mariachi musical tradition and style is that it is taught from father to child, from generation to generation.  There are many "Family" mariachis (in the mariachi tradition it is called a "dinastía"), where it is very common to see mariachi musicians ranging from 5 through 80! , grandfather and granddaughter... you get the point.  Traditionally, the music was taught by ear (called "rote" or "aural learning"), but a majority of mariachis now also learn to read music. As for all the traditional songs (the repertory) being written out: it was not part of the tradition originally, but more and more people are transcribing the music for teaching purposes, for documentation purposes, or for whatever reason.

Obviously, there is a difference if the kids are growing up in Mexico or in the U.S.  (In the U.S., you HAVE to attend school until you're 18, so you cannot work full-time.)  Many of the student groups in the U.S. work minimal hours weekly and help support their program with that money, which also includes paying for their trajes (which can be quite costly).

Question:
Do mariachis write their own music?

Answer:
Mariachi music for most of its 200 or so years has primarily been an aural tradition, passing songs down from generation to generation, father to son, ear to ear. In the 1980's there was a sudden renaissance of traditional Mexican music, not in its native México, but around the world. As interest grew in learning mariachi repertory from non-mariachi trained musicians, a need grew to provide written notational documentation of the many songs that have come to identify the mariachi tradition.

There are many well- trained transcribers who can easily listen to a recording and attempt to annotate the melodies and harmonies that make up the mariachi "sound". The "best" transcriber for the job is one who has also been a professional mariachi and who is familiar with the stylistic intricacies that truly make this Mexican traditional and popular music unique. Also, there are many who are not so fortunate as to have mariachi ensembles readily available to teach them in the traditional manner, by rote, imitating what the teacher plays to the student. For those who wish to grasp an understanding of the mariachi style and who don't have a mariachi musician to teach them, Mariachi Publishing Company's transcriptions are of the best transcriptions available.

Question

I would really like to know where I can buy videos of professional mariachi performing or videos of mariachi instructors showing the stylistic way of playing certain types of music.
For example, many times one gets the transcription and plays that transcription as written and many times that is not the correct style. A son has a characteristic way of playing for the violins, trumpet, etc... like the eighth notes in 3/4 to 6/8 time usually are suppose to be treated as dotted eighths followed by sixteenth.
I want to be able to show my group different genres and the characteristics of these genres.

Answer: It's in the works!  We invite all our MPC clients to stay in  contact on http://www.sobrino.net/mer/videos.html for the DEBUT  of our NEWEST mariachi education resources: VHS and DVD!

I have just now begun taking violin lessons and am interested in finding sheet music for elementary Mexican folk pieces and very basic (if there's such a thing) Mariachi music. Can you recommend music books, dealers, etc.?

ANSWER:  Mariachi Publishing Company sells exactly this; you could look as well at the book by Mel Bay Publishers (www.melbay.com MB99753, Laura Sobrino).  Actually, we are in the process of finalizing a new book for classic acoustic guitar, to be released approximately March 2003.

I need to find a guitar book with melody, chords, and words for the most common Mariachi songs. Thank you.

ANSWER:  Go to any Latin record shop in a Latino neighborhood and there are many cancioneros available with just words and chords.  Some have words, chords and a simple melody.  The problem with these books is that they are set in one key only and if you don't sing the song in that key, well you might be "struggling" thru it.  The books are organized sometimes by composer (i.e. Jose Alfredo Jimenez songs), by artist's hits (i.e. Juan Gabriel, or the "hits of a specific decade), by song form (i.e. all boleros, all rancheras etc).

Hi. It's great that you have this website. I was born in Guadalajara, raised in California. I sang and performed as a young adult in a choir and outside the choir with some musical accompaniment. When I am not in a choir rehearsing, I sing ranchera songs, A cappella style. I like to sing Ranchera Songs, because I believe that's just who I am, it's in my heart, but I have no musical instrumental experience. I never sang with a Mariachi I am now 51 and I know it's never too late to learn. I wouldn't know how to begin singing with a Mariachi Group. I would like to rehearsal some day with a Mariachi .

ANSWER:  The tradition is very strong in support of aficionados much like yourself.  Go to any place where a mariachi is performing and ask them to accompany you.  They will make adjustments automatically to keys and any mistakes you may make during your performance.  Also, there are many, many mariachi workshops available throughout the West and Southwest U.S. and Mexico where you can go and learn more about mariachi performance, and right from the professionals!

I am doing a report on mariachi and cumbia music for my...french class. Is it true that any rumors of a french origin to this music are invalid due to the fact that the music existed before french occupation?

Our band membership is trying to establish a REGION Mariachi Group made up of students from local high schools and need to know if what we are doing is legal. Any help would be appreciated.

I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNEW ANY PLACES WHERE GUITAR LESSONS ARE TAUGHT AT A RESONABLE PRICE FOR CHILDREN IN THE RIVERSIDE/DESERT AREA?

Answer:  Guitar classes, even for mariachi style, can be taken as a 'folk guitar' class in many community college and/or community programs through different cities.  Once the student knows the basic left hand chords and the some basic right hand rhythms, I would suggest going to Pancho Villa's Restaurant in Fontana (or call them) and ask them about children's mariachi programs.  I wouldn't take anyone to learn "mariachi" until they knew at least one year (better is 2!) of basic training on their instrument.

Hello I just have a question as far as is there a catalog or website to look on how to order trajes for a group and if so how would we get that sent to an address? Thank you.

Answer:  No.  Usually when one is looking to order suits, you go to the sastre and he will show you what he has made.  If you're interested in making up a suit of your own, you could combine from his samples, or ask him to make samples up based on what you tell him your ideas are.  Ask www.alsondelmariachi.com for more direct responses.

14 years ago some mariachis at "Mi Tierra" restaurant in San Antonio played a song for my infant daughter that included in the lyrics something like "Por gusto de mi padre me llamo munequita". I believe the name of the song is "Munequita". No one I've talked to seems to know it. Would you happen to have the lyrics and music to this song? My daughter's quinceanera is coming up and I would like to have the mariachis play it for her.

Answer:   I think we answered this on another club.

Hello. I am researching a new piece that I am writing that will either become a novel or a screenplay. I just wanted some reactions to the story from people with knowledge of the Mariachi culture as I begin the creation of the story. It is about a white guy from Nebraska who becomes friends with the owner of a local Mexican restaurant. Through this friendship the guys love of Mexican culture and music grows profoundly. He is a musician himself and begins to learn Mariachi with the help of his new friend. He then decides to go on a journey to the birthplace of Mariachi music in Mexico to study with a master and become a true Mariachi. That is the basic story I have created. I am very interested in creating a piece that is true to Mexican culture and that honors it and the traditions of Mariachi. Basically I am asking for any thoughts or reactions to the basic story idea from people on the inside of a culture that I am just beginning to learn about. Does it seem ridiculous? What would Mexicans think of a white Mariachi? How open is the Mexican culture ot outsiders? and so on... ANY thoughts would be greatly appreciated! thanks. mariachiblanco@yahoo.com

I am a mariachi born & raised in Tucson, AZ who recently moved to the L.A. area and am looking for steady work with a local group. I have performed and have traveled extensively with various groups from the Tucson and Phoenix areas. My primary instrument is the guitar but I can also fill in on the vihuela. I also sing both lead and harmonies. Please advise as to who I should contact that could point me in the right direction.

HOLA COMPANEROS, TENGO DUDAS Y ME GUSTARIA ME AYUDARAN EN ESTE ASPECTO POR FAVOR... LA PREGUNTA ES... SI ACASO LA EDAD TIENE QUE VER MUCHO PARA PODER ASPIRAR A SER INTEGRANTE DE UN GRUPO DE MARIACHI ? Y PORQUE CUANDO ALGUIEN TIENE UNA LINDA VOZ Y LO DEMUESTRA PUBLICAMENTE NO ES VALORADA AL DARLES UNA OPORTUNIDAD O INSITARLE A SEGUIR EXPLOTANDO ESE DON, Y OFRECER LAAYUDA QUE POSIBLEMENTE ESAS PERSONAS DESESN COMO UN SUENO DESDE NINOS Y NUNCA SE LES HA BRINDADO ? GRACIAS DE ANTEMANO SI ES POSIBLE SEPUEDA CONTESTAR ESTAS PREGUANTAS LESAGRADESCO TAL VES MUCHOS QUIERAN EXPESARSE Y SE LOS IMPIDE ALGO.

My mother's grandmother was Augustine Lara's sister. My mother is 82 years old (Rosalie Hernandez Duffy) and is trying to learn about our family. I have encouraged her so we may have an acurrate history of our past heritage. Any ideas or sites we may visit? Thanks for any assistance.
